General Liability Insurance

General liability is the foundation of any UTV rental or off-road tour business. It protects against third-party claims of bodily injury or property damage arising from your operations.

General Liability for SxS & UTV Rental Businesses

Putting customers behind the wheel of a powerful side-by-side is a high-energy business — and a high-exposure one. General liability (GL) responds when a third party is injured or their property is damaged because of your rental or tour operation: a bystander struck on the trail, a renter who claims your machine was defective, or property damage caused by one of your vehicles off-site.

Why Standard Policies Won't Cover You

Most standard business and commercial policies flatly exclude "recreational vehicle rental," "ATV/UTV operations," and "powersports." That means a generic BOP you bought online almost certainly leaves your core operation uninsured. We place your GL with specialty carriers that knowingly write UTV rental and guided off-road tour risk.

What GL Covers

  • Bodily injury: Third-party injuries connected to your operation
  • Property damage: Damage your operation or vehicles cause to others' property
  • Premises liability: Slip-and-falls and accidents at your rental lot or office
  • Products/operations: Claims a rented machine was improperly maintained or briefed
  • Defense costs: Legal defense even when a claim is groundless

Limits and Requirements

Land-use permits with the BLM, Forest Service, state parks, and many private trail systems require off-road operators to carry GL — commonly $1M per occurrence / $2M aggregate — and to name the land manager as additional insured. We issue certificates and additional insured endorsements quickly so you can keep operating on permitted land.

Property damage liability

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a normal business policy cover my UTV rental?

Almost never. Standard commercial policies exclude recreational/powersports rental. You need specialty coverage built for UTV rental and off-road tour operations — which is what we place.

Do trail permits require general liability?

Frequently, yes. BLM, Forest Service, state parks, and private trail systems often require GL with set limits and name themselves as additional insured. We provide the certificates you need.
